oral hpv testing
Did you know? HPV can cause cancer in several areas of the body, including the mouth/throat. HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer is on the rise, and accounts for up to 70% of oral cancers in both men AND women. It is estimated that approximately 80% of people have been exposed to the virus. While most immune systems can clear a HPV infection, there is risk for the virus to lay dormant and reactivate several years, even decades, after exposure.
We now have a way to test for the presence of HPV in the oral cavity, as an adjunct to our visual oral cancer screening. It's as simple as rinsing with a special mouthwash, sending the sample to our partner, FIDALABS, and waiting a couple of weeks for the results.
HPV lesions are not visible without a scope, so knowing whether you have the virus can be a powerful tool in early detection of potentially cancerous lesions. The earlier we can detect a lesion, the better odds we have of preventing oral cancer!
