Think Diet Soda is Better? Think Again...

Liz Davis

Who doesn’t just LOVE that crisp and bubbly feel of a carbonated beverage?! We know sugar causes all sorts of problems like cavities and weight gain, so now we also have all sorts of alternatives with artificial sweeteners and a variety of chemicals to add flavor to our soft drinks without the problems of sugar and high fructose corn syrup…but these additives still have their own implications for health! Check out the Washington Post’s report on a new study linking ALL soda to overall risk of early death.

In addition, any carbonated beverage - even plain club soda! - influences oral health. Carbonation is acidic, and over time damages the protective enamel layer of the teeth. Acid erosion of tooth enamel can lead to cavities, loss of tooth structure, teeth that break or chip, and jaw changes. Soda has also been linked to loss of calcium build up in our bones - and therefore, risk for osteoporosis.

Just a tidbit from us at Davis Dental Health - if you didn’t know, now you know!

What is Your Risk Level for Periodontal Disease?

Liz Davis

More and more systemic health problems are being linked to periodontal disease, the gum infection that leads to inflammation and destruction of the bone around the teeth. Periodontal disease is caused by several species of bacteria that, when given the right environment, wreak havoc in the mouth and can even travel to other areas of the body. Chronic inflammation (and it doesn’t matter where the inflammation originates, the chronic inflammatory state affects the entire body) plays a critical role in chronic systemic disease states such as diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, periodontal disease, and many others.

Have you ever had, or been told it is recommended that you have, a “deep cleaning” or non-surgical periodontal therapy? This treatment can get you headed down the road to healing and helping to control the presence of inflammation, but what if we knew how many of the disease-causing bacteria were in your unique oral flora? Those bad bacteria repopulate and start to take over again after just 90 days of being disturbed by a professional dental cleaning. What if you’re doing all the things your dentist recommends to take care of your periodontal health (cleanings every 3-4 months, using prescription toothpaste and/or mouthwash, FLOSSING!), and you still have progressive gum recession and deeper pockets when the hygienist measures them and bleeding gums?

Davis Dental Health offers a periodontal pathogen screening that detects 39 different disease-causing bacteria, and their relative presence in your normal oral bacteria load. That is, how many of the bad guys versus the good guys, and what that means in terms of your periodontal disease risk.

We also now offer chewable oral probiotics from FidaBiotics (from our lab, FidaLabs, that helps us test for periodontal bacteria, cavity-causing bacteria, and oral HPV) for those patients in the moderate to high range for periodontal disease risk. Changes in the oral bacteria can be seen in as little as two weeks, and use of the probiotics is generally suggested to last at least 90 days.

Sleep and Glucose Regulation

Liz Davis

Welcome back! Today we wanted to share a fabulous article and video from Dr. Rhonda Patrick about sleep and your body’s glucose regulation. Whether you’re diabetic (Type I or Type II), or simply aren’t getting the health results you’re hoping for with your New Year’s resolution for 2019, this is some great information for you to consider. We’ve posted on Facebook before about how important sleep is for the immune system, and this is another plug for sleep! Let’s tie it all together now, and highlight how quality sleep and proper blood glucose regulation will reduce systemic inflammation - WHOA! Mind blown; it really is all connected. One body, many contributing factors to health and wellness, and they’re all linked.

Dr. Patrick also has amazing health resources elsewhere on her website, so be sure to take a look around after learning all about sleep and glucose regulation!

Public Health Announcement

Liz Davis

It is always unfortunate when we see bad news about our profession, but today has been especially difficult. The recent article published in many news media outlets today (click here if you missed it) is about infection control issues and potential for spread of blood borne pathogens, in the office of Dr. George M. Davis.

We at Davis Dental Health would like to emphasize that we have no personal or professional affiliation with the office of Dr. George Davis, which has in fact been closed since September 2018. We share only the same last name, and his office was located across the street from ours, so we can understand the confusion and concern. Again, Dr. Liz Davis (married name; maiden name Coleman) is in no way related to, nor has she ever practiced with or even met Dr. George Davis.

Please contact us for questions or concerns.

FDA Warns Against Benzocaine for Babies

Liz Davis

Last week, the FDA issued a strong warning against the use of benzocaine-containing products in children under the age of 2, due to a potentially fatal blood disorder that could arise. These products are normally used for easing a baby's discomfort while teething. Examples include Baby Orajel, Hurricaine, and Orabase, among others. Instead, take a look at some recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics by clicking here.

Share the Dental Love: Join Our Referral Program!

Liz Davis

Did you know that every month we do TWO separate drawings in the office? The winners each receive a gift card to a local restaurant. How do you earn an entry, you ask? Great question!

1.   If you're a new patient (i.e. never been to Davis Dental Health, or if you saw Dr. Walsh but have never seen Dr. Davis), you'll have your name dropped in for that month.

2.   If you're already in our patient community, but you refer a friend, family member, coworker, etc. you'll earn an entry into the drawing for that month when your referral comes in for his or her first visit.

We're always accepting new patients, and your referrals are the greatest compliment!

Now Offering a New Option for Self-Pay Patients

Liz Davis

No dental benefits? Confused about insurance? We TOTALLY understand - it's a complicated health care world out there.

While we're in-network with a long list of insurance companies, the reality is that not everyone has dental benefits. Only you can decide whether it's in your best interest to seek an individual plan if your employer doesn't offer such benefits.

We want to make it EASIER on you to get the dental care you need and/or want. That's why we've carefully designed our Davis Dental Health Wellness Advantage. In the simplest terms, it's similar to a buy-one-get-one promotion. It can't be combined with additional dental benefits/insurance, so this isn't something to be used as a "supplement." This is a great option for patients without any existing dental coverage at all, who may only opt for one cleaning per year instead of two, due to finances.

While health care finances can be complicated, we hope this will help simplify the important relationship between provider and patient, and allow for more flexible, accessible, and timely treatment. Smart idea, right?
